Programs with a Purpose

The American Poetry Museum currently presents programs designed to encourage dialogue and to create meaningful connections through the exploration of American poetry.

The Museum's programs and projects are genrously funded by the Nathan Cummings Foundation, the Commonweal Foundation/Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, the DC Commision on the Arts and Humanities, the Far Southeast Family Strenthening Collaborative, and the DC Humanities Council.

Public Programs & Events
The Museum presents several events that feature diverse poetry and poetic forms. Most events will feature an open mic, a discussion portion designed to encourage discourse, and presentations by some of the country’s most talented poets. Education Programs
The Museum currently presents Youth Writing & Dialogue Workshops designed specifically for students in grades 2-12, and emphasize the importance of reading and writing skills through reading works of poetry as well as writing and presenting poetry. These workshops are presented in a variety of venues and adhere to national learning standards. To host a workshop at your site, please contact: education@americanpoetrymuseum.org.

Exhibitions
The Museum presents exhibition from its Anacostia Gallery (1922 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE, Washignton, DC 20020), online on the Museum's website (americanpoetrymuseum.org), and in its upcoming gallery at the Charles Sumner Library. These exhibitions are designed to promote dialogue as well as an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of the American experience. Collections
The Museum collects artifacts and maintain and archives of writings and objects relating to American poets and poetry as they relate to the educational purposes of the mission of the Museum. Objects are requested from the public and sought out from willing repositories. Collections are preserved and interpreted through the Museum’s exhibitions and will be available for research to the public. The Museum has begun a community and children’s poetry archive.
